Turner was prolific — he produced hundreds of paintings and thousands of drawings and sketches, and his work always rewards exploration.

It's tempting to call Turner a Proto-Impressionist — his embrace of colour and light predated and influenced them, after all.

But Turner, unlike the Impressionists, was interested by scenes of scale and drama.
